In a world where people are divided along so many different lines—race, religion, politics, and so much more—the wonderful thing about cycling is that there’s a place for everyone. No one cares about your gender or who you’re going to vote for; all that matters is that you’re out with your bicycle. Cycling is one of the most inclusive pursuits one can take part in. It is infinitely accessible.
Do you like the rugged outdoors? Do you enjoy getting far away from civilization into the mountains, the woods, or the desert? Maybe you even like pushing yourself and taking the occasional risk? Mountain biking may be just the thing for you.
Do you like going fast and feeling the wind blowing through your hair? Do you enjoy covering dozens and dozens, if not a hundred or so miles at a time? Do you crave speed and power? Road cycling may be just the thing for you.
Do you love adventure and exploring? Do you often find yourself wondering where that back road or path leads? Do you look at maps and satellite images, dreaming of unconventional ways to connect point “A” to point “B”? Gravel biking and/or bikepacking may be just the thing for you.
Do you enjoy a simple cruise through the neighborhood or greenbelt? Maybe you like rides through the park or to the pickleball courts. Perhaps you fancy a leisurely jaunt through your community with a group of like-minded friends. How about an alternative way to run local errands? A cruiser or hybrid may be just the thing for you.
Do you have health issues, or do you simply want a little added safety and stability to take that ride through the neighborhood or run local errands? A trike may be just the thing for you.
Are you interested in the newest technology? Maybe you’re exploring options for transportation other than a car or public transportation. Are you looking for a little extra oomph on your cycling adventures? An e-bike may be just the thing for you.
Again, the great news is that all of the above is available to you in the most inclusive community there is: the cycling community. A quality bicycle may cost a little more than one from a big box store. However, while the big box store “bicycle” is made to be nearly disposable and will only hold up for a very short time, a quality bicycle, with a little bit of common-sense care and maintenance, will provide its owner with 20 to 30 years (or more) of joy.
